Just heard that the traditional wording for the wedding creemony " if any man can shew any just cause why they may not lawfully be joined together, let him now speak or else hereafter forever hold his peace" - will cease to be if a bill being discussed at the Church of Ireland synod is passed. The proposals to bring the wording of the book fo common prayer into line with changed marriage laws in the north and south were being discussed in Armagh recently. The Civil Registration Act in the Republic in 2004 requires the couple to make a declaration of no civil impediment before the solemniser and 2 witnesses before the marriage or at the service, so the existing wording is no longer appropriate.
